Privacy policy
Last updated: 18 October 2026
Naija Now is a community platform where people share local information. This page explains what personal information we collect, why, who helps us handle it, and the choices you have. We have tried to write it in plain language.
What is public and what is private
Public: anything you post or show on your profile can be seen by anyone, including people who are not signed in and search engines. That is your display name, your profile picture (if you add one), your level and points, and your reports, photos, videos and comments, with the time you posted them.
Private: your email address, your password, your preferred state, your Near you area and alert setting, what you follow, and your notifications are visible only to you. They are not shown on your profile or to other members.
Only post what you are happy to have public. Please do not put personal details of other people in your reports or comments.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, your display name, and your password. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider and is stored in a protected form. We cannot see it.
- What you create: reports, comments, votes (confirm, dispute, and "it helped"), photos and videos you upload, areas you add, and reports you make about content.
- Your settings: your profile picture, preferred state, Near you area and alert choice, the members, states and categories you follow, and your notifications.
- View counts: when you open a report, we record a view using a random code stored in your browser. The code is not linked to your name, email or device. It lets us count one view per visitor per day. If you block browser storage, no view is recorded.
- Technical data: our hosting provider handles basic information needed to deliver the site, such as your IP address and browser type, in its normal server records.
Your location
We never require your location. If you press Use my location, your browser asks your permission first. We then send a position rounded to about 100 metres to OpenStreetMap, a free map service, to find the name of your state and area. We do not save your position. We only use the result to suggest a state and area, which you can change.
If you switch on Near you alerts, we save the place you choose (not your position) in your private settings, so we can tell you about new electricity, traffic and fuel reports there. You can change it or switch it off at any time in your profile.
Why we use it
- To run your account and let you sign in.
- To show reports, comments and profiles, and to work out levels and the leaderboard.
- To send you the emails you ask for, such as confirming your email address and resetting your password, and the notices you see on the site.
- To keep the platform safe, including reviewing content that people report and hiding content that breaks our rules.
- To count how many times reports are viewed, for interest only.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not show advertising, and we do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Cookies and browser storage
- Sign-in cookies keep you signed in. The site cannot work for signed-in members without them.
- Browser storage holds the random view-counting code, and a note that you dismissed an invitation to join, so we do not show it again.
Who helps us handle your information
We use these services to run Naija Now. They handle information only to provide their service to us.
- Supabase provides our database, sign-in and file storage, including your account, posts and uploads.
- Vercel hosts the website.
- Resend delivers the emails we send you, such as confirmation and password reset emails.
- OpenStreetMap receives a rounded position only when you press Use my location.
- Google Fonts supplies fonts used when we make picture cards for sharing. No personal information is sent.
Some of these services process information outside Nigeria, including in Europe and the United States.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect people from harm.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and what you post until you ask us to delete them. Reports stay visible as long as they are published, though time-sensitive reports are marked as outdated as they age. View records are kept to count views. Content that is hidden by a moderator is kept so that decisions can be reviewed.
Your choices and rights
You can see and change your name, picture, preferred state and Near you settings in your profile. You can delete your own reports and comments yourself.
You can ask us to show you the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account and the content you posted. We do not yet have a delete button, so please email privacy@naijanow.org from the email address on your account, and tell us what you want. We may need to check it is really you. Deleting your account is permanent. Under Nigerian data protection law you may also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Children
Naija Now is not aimed at children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Keeping it secure
We use access rules in our database so that members can only change their own information, and private settings are visible only to the person they belong to. No online service can promise perfect security, so please use a strong password that you do not use anywhere else.
Changes to this page
We will update this page if what we do changes, and change the date at the top. Please check it from time to time.
